What is a Community School?

Community schools are a national strategy designed to improve student and family outcomes by promoting the physical, mental, academic and extracurricular supports needed for them to thrive. Community schools are designed to be a neighborhood hub, where families, staff members, partners and residents unite to provide all students with high quality academics, enrichment opportunities, social services and more. Because each community school reflects the needs and interests of the community it resides in, no two are the same, but all community schools have similar focus points:

  • Integrated Student Support – A dedicated staff member coordinates support programs to address out-of-school learning barriers for students and families. Mental and physical health programs support student success.
  • Active Family and Community Engagement – Schools function as neighborhood hubs. There are educational opportunities for adults, and family members can share their stories and serve as equal partners in promoting student success.
  • Expanded and Enriched Learning Time and Opportunities – Enrichment activities emphasize real-world learning and community problem solving. After-school, weekend, and summer programs provide academic instruction and individualized support.
  • Collaborative Leadership and Practices – Parents, students, teachers, principals, and community partners build a culture of professional learning, collective trust, and shared responsibility through site-based leadership teams and teacher learning communities.

Y Membership

The Y has announced that all families that are part of a Y community school can receive a family center membership at $10 dollars a month for your household (membership for up to 4 adults plus all dependent children in the household valued at 106.00/month) . There are five family centers that are participating in this partnership: the Weinberg Y on 33rd, the Y in Druid Hill, the Orokawa Y in Towson, the Y in Parkville and the Y in Catonsville. To take advantage of this membership:

  1. Inform the school that you need a letter! A signed and stamped original letter must be picked up in the front office. Please let the school know that you would like a letter by phone or email and it will be ready for parent/guardian or scholar pickup by the end of the day.
  2. Take the stamped letter, the card you will be using for payment, and your ID to your chosen Y center so that they can process your membership. There will be a one-time 25.00 activation fee and the monthly 10.00 membership fee.
  3. Use your membership to take advantage of pools, group fitness, rock walls, special events and more! Your reduced-cost membership is active for as long as your scholar is enrolled at Lillie May Carroll Jackson Charter School.

Family and Community Engagement

The goal of the Family Engagement Team is to promote the active connection, learning and growth of all scholars through continued effective partnerships with families, community partners and other stakeholders that support the mission and vision of the school and district. Our goals are:

  • Every family coming into the school and/or interacting with school personnel feels welcome and included.
  • Families and school personnel engage in regular, meaningful, two way communication about scholars.
  • Families have a voice in decisions that affect children and work together with school personnel and the community to create policies, practices, and programs.
  • Families are connected to learning opportunities, community services and civic participation.
  • Families are empowered to be advocates for their own and other children.

Ideas:
