Scholar-Led Conferences: Sign Up

Scholar-Led Conferences

She has been getting ready to tell you what she knows.

At a Scholar-Led Conference, your daughter runs the meeting. She walks you through her own work, names what she has learned, tells you where she is stuck, and sets her next goal. Her crew leader is in the room. You are the audience she has been preparing for.

Wednesday, September 30 and Friday, October 2  ·  Wednesday 1:30 to 3:30, Friday 8:00 to 3:30  ·  Lillie May Carroll Jackson Charter School

What happens in the room

The conference runs about twenty minutes. Your scholar opens her portfolio and takes you through it herself: a piece of writing she is proud of, a math problem she got wrong and then got right, the habits she is building in crew. She will show you evidence, not just grades. Then she will tell you what she is working on next and what she needs from you at home. Her crew leader is there to add context and answer your questions, but your scholar does the talking. That is the point.

Come with questions
Ask her to show you the hard part. Ask what she would do differently. Questions tell her you took it seriously.

Let her lead
If she pauses, give her the pause. Learning to speak for her own work in front of adults is part of what she is practicing.

Bring your scholar
There is no conference without her. Grandparents, aunties, and anyone who shows up for her are welcome too.

Questions families ask

Do I meet with every one of her teachers?

No. One conference, with her crew leader, who knows her across the whole day and has pulled together work from all of her classes. If a specific subject question comes up that needs a subject teacher, the crew leader will connect you afterward.

I have more than one scholar here. Do I sign up twice?

Yes, once for each daughter, since each one has her own crew leader and her own portfolio. Sign up for one, then start again for the next. Try to leave a gap between the two times so you are not rushing between rooms.

What if none of the times work for me?

Call the office at (443) 320-9499. We will find you another way, including by phone or video if that is what it takes. Every scholar deserves an audience.

I need an interpreter.

Tell us in the notes box when you sign up, and name the language. We will arrange it before your conference.

Something came up and I cannot make my time.

Your confirmation email has a link that releases your slot so another family can use it. Then come back here and pick a new one. Or just call (443) 320-9499.

Pick your time

Choose her grade and her crew leader, then tell us her name. You will see the times still open with her crew leader, and you will get a confirmation by email.

If the sign-up does not load above, open it in its own window or call (443) 320-9499 and we will book it for you.
